What is cryosurgery?

Cryosurgery is the treatment of lesions with the application of a cold substance. In most cases, liquid nitrogen is used to destroy the lesion(s). After the treatment with liquid nitrogen, there may be a burning sensation or pain that can last up to 24 hours. This discomfort can be relieved with Extra Strength Tylenol or similar pain relief medication.

Within 24-48 hours a blister may form (i.e. clear blister or red blood filled blister). If a blister appears DO NOT drain or open the blister! Other reactions that may occur include but are not limited to: swelling around the treated area, the formation of a black scab, discoloration of the surrounding skin, persistent redness or a white or dark spot at the related site.

Care instructions of the treated area twice daily until healed

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Clean the blister sites with soap and water and apply ointment. (Vaseline or Aquaphor)
  3. A band-aid may be applied loosely over the blister until it is dry, but is not required.
  4. Call the office if signs of infection occur, i.e. excessive redness, swelling, heat, increased pain or yellow discharge.
